Imbibing Punctuality among Preschoolers (and their Parents)

Being Punctual is a habit best engraved since Preschool. While the benefits of reaching preschool on time might seem commonplace, the disadvantages of arriving late can have lot of repercussions on the learning imparted and absorbed. This is due to the small attention spans, varied developmental spurts and growing phases that such young children go through. Disruptions, chaos, disorder can easily affect a child and have telling consequences much later.

In fact, a credible study has indicated that children who were late to school during preschool years were 10 times more likely than their punctual counterparts to be chronically absent in the first grade or three times more likely to be absent in primary. Hence, every preschool programme would do well to work closely with parents to ensure that the child is brought to the premises on time so that the time is used effectively as per the curriculum to get every child on board.

Plan the day ahead. Keep the uniform, your clothes, child's school bag, food preparation before sleeping the previous night.
Have fun motivating games among family members– keep a race to see who'll get dressed on time, clocking up on stars or points every time the child dresses up by himself or is ready on time or throws no tantrum etc.
Look after the hygienic needs of the child in advance – Give a nice shower to your little one before sleeping. So in case it gets late, you could just have him wash his face, arms, legs while reserving the bath for when s/he comes after school.
Make a fun bedtime routine orchestrated to the liking of your little one. Read him/her a favorite book or give a relaxing massage or share how each other's days went by.
Make it fun to wake up early too. Keep a reserve of at least 45 minutes before the child neds to start preparing for the grind to go to school – that way s/he will also look forward to going to school after being assured of his brief playtime or some quality time with family.
Have a contingency plan. What if it rains more than usual or the maid doesn't turn in or you have had a late night's sleep.
Set some rules in stone – the important ones at least – of going to bed not later than a particular time to ensure that the child is well rested. And of course, keeping your habits in check too. Children will only learn by examples you set.
Have an open communication channel with your school administration if there are some emergencies or if there are some genuine reasons why your ward cannot make it on time but use this with caution. You can't cry wolf often and be expected to be taken seriously!
